Stick With the Plan: Spray at Tassel for Stronger Corn

Tar Spot has been confirmed in at least 14 Nebraska counties, and more confirmations are expected soon. The instinct might be to spray early — but spraying too soon often leads to needing a second pass. Our best strategy? Stick with the plan: spray at tassel.
What We’re Flying to Spray at Tassel
We’re lining up Veltyma applications at VT — ideally at full tassel or just before. In most cases, we’re recommending the 10 oz/acre rate this season. That higher rate gives you more protection and longer residual, especially if conditions stay wet and warm. Timing this right helps you protect all your yield-making leaves and avoids the cost of going twice.
What We’re Seeing in the Field
Yes, Tar Spot is here. But, we’re not seeing rapid, field-wide spread just yet. Early-season sprays won’t carry you through grain fill, and the crop’s own defenses are still active pre-tassel. By holding for VT, we get the most bang for our buck (and the most bushels for the pass).
What to Watch
Some late-planted fields or historically risky areas might justify a two-pass plan. In those cases, a pre-tassel spray could be followed by a second application about three weeks later. But for most acres, a single, well-timed Veltyma pass at tassel, especially at the higher rate, is the smart, steady move.
In Wrap...
This season is shaping up to be a Tar Spot year. But panic spraying won’t beat smart spraying. Let’s fly with a plan — and make sure every pass counts.
