Beans First, Windy Windows, and a Dry Start for Nebraska Aerial Applications

Updated: Apr 18

Welcome to Knox Ag’s Weekly Field Report: Flight Plan.

It’s the third week of April and while not everything is moving at once, there’s plenty happening. We’ve got some planters rolling, sprayers catching narrow windows, and a lot of decisions being made based on weather and soil. Here’s what I’m seeing this week from both the cockpit and conversations with growers on the ground.

What We're Flying

Sprayers are flying when the wind gives us a break. There haven’t been a lot of all-day runs, but we’re picking our spots and getting good coverage when the conditions allow. So far, everything that’s gone out is looking solid.

What We're Seeing in the Field

Most of what I’ve seen planted so far is soybeans, and I think that’s the smart move. Beans are more forgiving when it comes to early-season conditions. They can sit in cool, dry soil and still come up even and strong once things warm up.

Corn, on the other hand, likes that good start. And with dry ground and only a small chance of moisture in the next few days, waiting a bit longer on corn might lead to better emergence. Soil temps are warming, but it’s not quite there yet for consistent success.

What to Watch for in Nebraska Aerial Applications

If you’re on the fence, I wouldn’t hesitate to keep planting beans. It’s a good use of the window we’ve got. But if you’re holding back on corn, you’re not alone — and I’d say you’re making a sound call. This season is all about timing, and holding off another day or two might set you up better for the long haul.

We’re optimistic. It’s dry, yes, but we’ve seen good results with early applications so far. Everyone’s working hard to stay safe and make the right moves — and that’s what matters most.

As always, if you’ve got questions about timing, chemistry, or flying your acres, don’t hesitate to call or text your Nebraska aerial application expert. We’re here when you need us.
