If you've noticed our airplanes making fungicide passes a little earlier than normal, there's a reason for it.
A V12 fungicide application is becoming a more common strategy as growers adapt to increasing tar spot pressure. Instead of reacting after disease begins to spread, we're working to protect the crop before it has a chance to become established.
Why We're Making V12 Fungicide Applications
This week we're making fungicide applications around the V12 growth stage on many corn acres.
Years ago, most fungicide conversations centered around tassel timing. While VT-R1 is still an important application window, a V12 fungicide application gives us an opportunity to establish protection earlier and stay ahead of disease pressure.
On many farms this season, we're planning a two-pass fungicide program that starts at V12 and returns around VT-R1 for extended protection through grain fill.
What We’re Seeing in the Field
V12 is an important growth stage because the ear leaf is beginning to emerge and unroll.
That leaf contributes a significant portion of the energy needed to fill the ear. Protecting it before disease pressure builds gives the crop a better opportunity to stay healthy throughout the season.
Rather than waiting until symptoms appear, we're trying to protect yield potential before the fight starts.
When a V12 Fungicide Application Makes Sense
Every field is different, but if your corn is approaching V12, now is the time to start thinking about fungicide timing—not after disease shows up.
Weather, crop stage, and scheduling can all change quickly this time of year. Having a plan in place gives you the best opportunity to make a timely application instead of chasing disease after it's already established.
